This Year Put Stock in Something That Matters
Charitable giving doesn’t always mean cash. By gifting appreciated securities, your support will have an even greater impact — without denting your pocketbook. When you donate appreciated stock, mutual funds, bonds and other publicly traded securities (held for more than 1 year), you can avoid capital gains tax. So don’t sell your investments and be taxed – donate it instead! You can also benefit if you itemize deductions on your income taxes. You can deduct 100% of the value of the contribution. And now it’s fast, safe, and free to you to donate stock and securities to Northwoods Land Trust.
How you can donate stock:
Use our DonateStock.com tool to initiate a gift from your brokerage account through a secure portal in minutes at no cost to you. There is a 3.8% transaction fee to NWLT, similar to a credit card transaction. Use the button below to initiate your gift to the Northwoods Land Trust. Donate Stock will make your giving easy and transfer the sold securities to NWLT in cash.
Alternatively, if you don’t want to set up a securities transfer online, you can gift funds from your brokerage account with the help of your investment firm or advisor. Tell them that you’d like to donate appreciated stock or other securities to the Northwoods Land Trust, a nonprofit organization. They can contact us or provide you with a form to fill out. Contact Ted Anchor at (715) 479-2490 or ted@northwoodslandtrust.org to get the information associated with NWLT’s brokerage account to complete your gift!
Other tax advantageous ways of giving:
IRAs: If you are 73 years of age or older, your individual retirement account (IRA) may be subject to “required minimum distributions” (RMD). You can satisfy these requirements and make a “qualified charitable distribution” (QCD) of up to $100,000 without having to pay income tax. The transfer must go directly from your IRA to NWLT by your RMD deadline. If you are older than 59 1/2 years of age, you can make a distribution from your IRA and then make a charitable gift to NWLT without penalty.
DAFs (donor-advised funds) or family foundations: Consider the Northwoods Land Trust for an annual gift or grant to forever protect land and water for current and future generations!
